She is one impressive woman.’ — Victoria Derbyshire Previously an expert multi-tasker in her capacity as a busy, married, forty-two-year-old mother of two, and part time lawyer commuting into London, Sara managed her life by to-do list after to-do list. However, when breast cancer appeared on her list, Sara s life was thrown upside down and she had to make a few changes. Armed with a multitude of shopping lists, to-do lists and checklists, she made it through eighteen months of gruelling cancer treatment to the other side, where, for the past couple of years, she s been basking in the glow of hair regrowth, new eyebrows and a renewed love for life. Ticking Off Breast Cancer is a chronological narrative of Sara s life from the day of her diagnosis and throughout her treatment. It follows Sara as she deals with the physical, emotional and mental challenges thrown at her by cancer and provides an honest insight into the treatment given to a breast cancer patient together with the impact that this has on someone s life. By sharing many of her to-do lists in the form of checklists at the end of each chapter, Ticking Off Breast Cancer provides thoughtful, helpful advice for every step of the way. • A Survivor’s Guide to Triple Negative Breast Cancer: All you need to know from diagnosis, to treatment, recovery and beyond.

Exploring the emotional and medical aspects and everything the Author wish she had known when first diagnosed, the book is designed to help anybody with a primary Triple Negative Breast Cancer. The book takes the reader from diagnosis, through to treatment and beyond in an easy to read format, broken down into sections with illustrations and photographs.

    Diagnosis:

The shock of finding out you have breast cancer, and then being told it’s Triple Negative, can be confusing and worrying. You may be bombarded with information, but also have a long list of questions. Taking the stress out of finding answers, the book starts by demystifying breast cancer, how it begins, understanding Triple Negative, and why it’s different to other types of breast cancer. With this knowledge, it will help to understand your own diagnosis, and hopefully, you’ll feel better informed for any meetings with your oncologist or surgeon.

    Treatment:

What should you expect from surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy? The book guides you from the point of diagnosis, helping you to prepare, and understand the process including typical timelines and treatments. Each section is broken down, so you know what to expect and when. Simply understanding what’s to come, can help take the fear out of the unknown. Read real-life stories from Triple Negative breast cancer patients who discuss their treatment, surgery, what they had, and why.

    Recovery & Beyond:

Treatment has finished and it’s the day you’ve waited for, but what now? How long is recovery and what should you expect? As you emerge out of the hospital bubble, you enter the most challenging time because life can feel different. You may feel anxious and apprehensive, scared that cancer may come back. The book discusses what you might expect, the ongoing aches and pains that cause concern and what you can do to help yourself. Your future may be a little different, but there’s no reason why Triple Negative can’t be a part of your past.

The book contains treatment regimes specifically for the UK, but all other information is relevant to anybody with a Triple Negative Breast Cancer worldwide.

  • everything you hoped you’d never need to know about bowel cancer: A doctor’s very personal guide to getting through the sh*t and beyond

‘THIS BOOK COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE’ Lorraine Kelly

    1 in 15 men.
    1 in 18 women.
Every year in the UK 43,000 people are newly diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Dr Anisha Patel is one of them. Young, fit, and married to a consultant gastroenterologist and bowel cancer screening specialist, in 2018 she was diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer.

Despite being a family doctor, Anisha had no idea what would come next. With the benefit of hindsight, and after first-hand experience, she understands now that the diagnosis is just the beginning, that treatment can be physically and mentally overwhelming, and that the hard work really starts when the treatment ends.

Drawing on her own experience and her medical expertise, as well as that of specialists in the field, Anisha’s book is an essential companion for anyone facing a cancer diagnosis. She outlines what to expect at each stage, from diagnosis, through treatment and into the ‘new normal’ that awaits, with practical advice and emotional guidance for every step of the way.

Hers is not the only voice; here you will find a chorus of individuals who share their own lived experiences of bowel cancer and its aftermath, in the hope that they, too, can navigate you through the eye of the cancer storm, to thrive in the life beyond.

Powerful and personal, this is a life-saving book for a life-changing diagnosis, and a testament to human resilience and the enduring power of hope.

  • Colorectal Cancer (Oxford Oncology Library)

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in the world. Twenty-five percent of patients present with advanced disease and, despite complete surgical resection of early stage disease, 50% of patients relapse. The treatment of colorectal cancer has advanced rapidly in recent years, and controversies persist regarding optimal management (e.g. whether combination chemotherapy should be used first-line or in a staged fashion, how long to treat patients for and whether to use an intermittent or continuous schedule and whether to refer for a radical approach for advanced patients).

Part of the Oxford Oncology Library, this pocketbook summarises the epidemiology and risk factors for developing colorectal cancer and the basic biology of the disease. The evidence governing approaches in diagnosis and oncological management both surgical and non-surgical of the primary tumour is also covered, including which surgical approaches to use and indications for neoaduvant / adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Providing perspectives from the different disciplines involved including surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology and palliative care, this pocketbook will serve as an invaluable reference for all health care professionals involved in the management of patients with colorectal cancer.

  • Oncology Massage: An Integrative Approach to Cancer Care

In Oncology Massage – an integrative approach to cancer care the authors have created a textbook which will provide both experienced and inexperienced therapists with a resource to expand their knowledge and understanding of working with people with cancer. Cancer occurrence and survivorship are now so common that every massage therapist will at some time work with clients who have been through cancer treatment. The short and long-term effects of biomedical cancer treatment require massage therapy adaptations to pressure, site, position and duration to provide safe and effective treatments. Informed massage therapists can support the body to promote overall wellness as well as identify the underlying secondary effects of cancer treatment that contribute to physical dysfunction.

Oncology Massage: An Integrative Approach to Cancer Care provides massage therapists with essential information for:

Treatment planning based on the physiology of cancer and cancer treatments

    Critical, thoughtful treatment decision making

Consideration of the psychosocial effects of cancer

Enhancing therapist self-awareness and building a therapeutic relationship.

The information is presented in a clear and simple format with plentiful use of illustrations and information boxes which allows it to be used both as a learning tool for those new to the field of oncology massage and as a resource for quick referral when working with new patients.

The techniques of massage therapy change very little; it is the knowledge and understanding of their use that distinguishes a massage therapist. Oncology Massage is unusual in that it includes contributions not only from a range of experienced practitioners but also from people with cancer who have received massage during and after cancer treatment. This feedback from clients provides an invaluable addition to the understanding of how massage can be used as a safe and effective part of cancer care.

  • Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with Cancer

The field of oncology massage is maturing into a discipline with a deeper and deeper body of knowledge. The 3rd edition of Medicine Hands reflects this maturation.

Every chapter contains updated information and insights into massaging people affected by cancer. New chapters have been added to cover each stage of the cancer experience: treatment, recovery, survivorship, side effects from the disease, and end of life. These new chapters and organizational structure will make it easier for the reader to find the information needed to plan the massage session for a given client. In addition, a new chapter has been added that focuses on the Pressure/Site/Positioning framework. This is the clinical framework around which the massage session is planned.

  • Alive, Surviving Modern Oncology

Cancer is a bitch of a disease. Every single person who’s experienced being diagnosed and treated is a hero. There are a lot of cancer books out there. What’s different about this one?

Maybe nothing. Maybe a lot. I’m a psychologist by trade. About fifteen years back, I started writing novels. Unfortunately, there’s not a scrap of fiction in Alive. There are also no dragons, unicorns, or magical worlds. This book was tough to write. In places, it will be equally tough to read. In addition to my personal saga, it includes stories from other brave souls who volunteered to be part of this project. There are also chapters about the etiology of cancer, cancer as big business in America (and elsewhere), avoiding scams, and integrative oncology.

Like most, I started my cancer journey believing the MDs had my best interests at heart. A few did, but to so many others I was nothing but a number, a statistic, many steps removed from a human being.

My hope for Alive is it will empower others to stand up for themselves, to ask questions, to do their own research. Ultimately, everyone’s life is precious and worth the effort of self-advocacy.

The protocol focuses on the “Essential Eight” and how these often trace molecules are having such a profound impact on our health. • Cancer Virus Hunters: A History of Tumor Virology

Traces the history of the study of tumor viruses and its role in driving breakthroughs in cancer research.

Worldwide, approximately one-fifth of human cancers are caused by tumor viruses, with hepatitis B virus and HPV being the leading culprits. While the explosive growth in molecular biology in the late twentieth century is well known, the role that the study of tumor viruses has played in driving many of the greatest breakthroughs is not. Without the insights gained by studying tumor viruses, many significant theoretical advancements over the last four decades in cellular and molecular biology would not have been made. More practically, the study of tumor viruses has saved thousands, if not millions, of lives.

In Cancer Virus Hunters, Gregory J. Morgan traces the high points in the development of tumor virology, from Peyton Rous’s pioneering work on chicken tumors in 1909 to the successful development of an HPV vaccine for cervical cancer in 2006. Morgan offers a novel approach to understanding the interconnectedness of a long series of biomedical breakthroughs, including those that led to seven Nobel prizes. Among other advances, Morgan describes and contextualizes the science that prompted the discoveries of reverse transcriptase, RNA splicing, the tumor suppressor p53, the vaccine for hepatitis B, and the HIV test. He also explores how cancer virus hunters have demonstrated the virtue of beginning with a simple system, even when investigating a complex disease like cancer.

Based on extensive archival research and over fifty interviews with experts, Cancer Virus Hunters is a tour de force summarizing a century of research to show how discoveries made with tumor viruses came to dominate the contemporary understanding of cancer. By showcasing the scientists themselves, the book makes for an unusually accessible journey through the history of science. It will be of interest to biomedical professionals–especially in oncology, hepatology, and infectious disease–in addition to historians of science and anyone interested in cancer research.

            • Individual Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy for Patients with Advanced Cancer: A Treatment Manual

The importance of spiritual well-being and the role of “meaning” in moderating depression, hopelessness and desire for death in terminally-ill cancer and AIDS patients has been well-supported by research, and has led many palliative clinicians to look beyond the role of antidepressant treatment in this population. Clinicians are focusing on the development of non-pharmacologic interventions that can address issues such as hopelessness, loss of meaning, and spiritual well-being in patients with advanced cancer at the end of life. This effort led to an exploration and analysis of the work of Viktor Frankl and his concepts of logotherapy, or meaning-based psychotherapy. While Frankl’s logotherapy was not designed for the treatment of patients with life-threatening illnesses, his concepts of meaning and spirituality have inspired applications in psychotherapeutic work with advanced cancer patients, many of whom seek guidance and help in dealing with issues of sustaining meaning, hope, and understanding cancer and impending death in the context of their lives. Individual Meaning-Centered Group Psychotherapy (IMCP), an intervention developed and rigorously tested by the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, is a seven-week program that utilizes a mixture of didactics, discussion and experiential exercises that focus around particular themes related to meaning and advanced cancer. Patients are assigned readings and homework that are specific to each session’s theme and which are utilized in each session. While the focus of each session is on issues of meaning and purpose in life in the face of advanced cancer and a limited prognosis, elements of support and expression of emotion are inevitable in the context of each group session. The structured intervention presented in this manual can be provided by a wide array of clinical disciplines, ranging from chaplains, nurses, palliative care physicians, to counselors, psychotherapists, social workers, graduate psychology students, psychologists and psychiatrists.
            • Lung Cancer (Oxford American Oncology Library)

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death in the world. Recently, better understanding of the biology of lung cancer has led to the development of newer targeted therapies for specific subpopulations of lung cancer patients. While this has led to multiple exciting advances that promise to improve outcomes in the future, there has also been a significant increase in the complexity of care of the lung cancer patient. Part of the Oxford American Oncology Library, this concise handbook identifies best-practice guidelines, as well as differences of opinion in the field. It presents the most current procedures for the diagnosis and management of lung cancer in a succinct and easy-to-read manner. Chapters focus on topics such as the biology, pathology, and staging of lung cancer, special populations, and supportive care. Lung Cancer is a must-have tool for busy oncologists.
            • SURGICAL ONCOLOGY: SURGICAL TREATMENT OF CANCER

              SURGICAL ONCOLOGY

Surgical oncology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on the surgical treatment of cancer. It involves the surgical management of various types of malignant tumors in different parts of the body. Surgeons who specialize in surgical oncology are highly trained in performing complex procedures aimed at removing cancerous tissues while preserving the surrounding healthy tissues as much as possible.

In surgical oncology, the primary goal is to achieve complete tumor removal, also known as surgical resection. This may involve removing the primary tumor along with nearby lymph nodes and surrounding tissues to ensure the eradication of cancer cells. The surgical approach can vary depending on the location, stage, and type of cancer.

Reconstruction plays a crucial role in surgical oncology, especially in cases where significant tissue removal is necessary. Surgeons employ various techniques and approaches to reconstruct or repair the affected area to restore form and function. This may involve the use of tissue flaps, implants, prostheses, or other reconstructive methods.

Surgical oncologists work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists, to develop personalized treatment plans for each patient. The surgical procedure is often a part of a comprehensive treatment approach that may also include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or targeted therapy.

Advancements in surgical techniques, such as minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgeries, have revolutionized the field of surgical oncology, allowing for more precise tumor removal, reduced post-operative complications, and faster recovery times.

Overall, surgical oncology plays a critical role in the management of cancer, offering potentially curative treatments, palliative interventions to alleviate symptoms, and helping improve the quality of life for cancer patients.
