Very cynical, expensive – but if you truly suffer from depression you will know there is no cost limit . Expected little – totally amazed. One week in – feel sooo much better ! Like your brain has been re wired or given a kick up the … I don’t know what’s happening but am religiously boiling my brain every day . 15 yrs of anti depressants hasn’t achieved this ! Feel more relaxed , less negative depressed cyclical addictive thoughts , less worrying , more enjoyment, better sleep . A convert – amazing . Be warned – it does sting and burn a bit where the pads go on but becomes less as you use it . But I’d gladly bore two holes in my head if this is the affect – no pain no gain . All I can say is I don’t know how but it WORKS ! Totally pleased and the hole in my bank account well worth it .

History: I have struggled a lot with depression, insomnia and anxiety throughout my life, this was amplified after I became a parent and got severe enough to be sectioned (I had a plan and was fully intending to go through with it and then I was hospitalised). I’d never found medication to help, they seemed to add even more symptoms and relieve none, or make me feel even worse (often extremely irritable, agitated and frustrated, other ones would make me not care about anything, including my child, I just didn’t FEEL anything at all, which was weirdly even worse than feeling completely hopeless). I’d tried several SSRI’s, SNRI’s, a couple of atypical and a beta blocker. At times I was prescribed strong sleeping tablets and we even tried diazapam for a short time (that made me feel like I was having a stroke!). I’d tried 3 rounds of CBT to no avail and even a short stint of DBT while on the psychiatric ward. None resonated with me nor helped me recover.
After trying so many medications I went through this long period of numbness, I now know this to be called anhedonia. This scared me as I wondered if I was broken and if I’d feel anything again. I also had PSSD (google it).
I had got so low I was considering an antipsychotic (despite not having psychosis) and ECT when I came across TDCS. I did extensive research and felt like it was worth a try, even with the steep price.
My experience with TDCS: It stings, where the pads lay on the skin, my skin peeled, this worried me a lot as I wondered if this would just get worse and worse and end up just seeing my skull, it didn’t get worse but also won’t really heal while you’re still using is very regularly. Worth noting I have very sensitive skin (rosacea) and just rubbing lotion in my skin makes my skin red. I use the machine only when wearing headphones and distracting myself with games, music or videos, if not, I can hear the machine and it kind of feels like tinnitus, especially when it’s starting and ending. You get used to the feeling quickly. The first few times it was weird but I don’t really notice it anymore at all.
In regard to my symptoms of mental health, this does what I’d hoped medication would for me. It doesn’t cure me, I am still depressed and anxious and still struggle with insomnia, but I would say it reduces them all by a good 25-35%. During the beginning of treatment you can use it a lot more, 5x a week, I strongly recommend doing that as you will see results pretty quickly, if it works for you. I noticed a difference within a week and within a month a BIG difference (look at the scores on the pic I’ve included).
After about 6 weeks of using it once or twice a week you can restart the 5x a week again.
On my picture, near the middle you can see the sharp increase in my score, this was because I wanted to see if not using it for a couple of weeks would make any difference, it did. This was enough to convince me that this definetly helps keep my depression and anxiety at bay.
There is a cbt element with this headset that comes with the app. It’s not mandatory to use and I think if used would help even further, but I haven’t really engaged with it much as I find the headset enough to help on it’s own.
I was later diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder. This makes me understand my depression, anxiety and insomnia a bit more but the headset is STILL the most helpful treatment I’ve ever had and I’ll continue to still use it.
Highly recommend. If it doesn’t work for you, you can always just sell it on but I really think it’s worth trying.

I have been using the headset for several weeks and feel it has helped me more than any other treatment I have tried. The accompanying app is really useful too although there were a few teething problems in terms of playing videos. Pleasantly surprised. Note I ordered direct from Flow
