Although. happily, the UK is mosquito free in the winter, it means I haven’t been able to test out how effective they are. However, they are NHS approved, which is a good thing, are safe for kids, one size fits all, are Deet free, they are easy to wear and look pretty cool in lots of nice colours and protect from mosquitos, gnats and ticks for up to 250 hours. All good. Plus they are all natural. Great product.

You can certainly smell the essential oils that coat these bands and if that is enough to deter the biters, I’m all for it. The bands seem well made and are easy to slip on and off. Will be great for use in the summer months when the biters are out – I’m hopeful they will work.

This product is sold out on The Mosquito Companies website. I think that in itself speaks volumes.

I haven’t unpacked these I can smell the strength on the bracelets through all the packaging, ie blister pack and thick plastic bag. (I have a cat who would chew these so can’t unpack them, unless I put it on my wrist and keep it there, not really needed in the UK in Jan).

My niece is going travelling around South East Asia in March and she got bitten at a festival a few years ago and ended up in A&E after it turned sceptic and caused a rodent ulcer. So really this order was a no brainer. I am hoping it will be a cost effective and long lasting solution to travel. I am going to give these to her in advance of departure so she can buy a couple more. Not heavy to take with her and hopefully prevent a trip to a foreign hospital with bites.

If you are very prone to insect bites you will probably try anything to keep the little monsters away! As I said the fact they are sold out on the companies website speaks volumes.

I’m off to Central America and I thought these would be a good addition whilst trekking in the rain forest. They are individually wrapped, which preserves their scent and even in the packets you can smell the citronella. The brackets themselves seem well made. The packaging is a bit bulky for backing and at around £1.60 per bracelet, which I believe can be worn for a couple of days, the price isn’t bad but there are others out there which are cheaper.

I will update on their insect repelling properties when I return from the trip and have used them in an environment where they are truly put to the test.

UPDATE: I used these bands on my wrist whilst in Central America, using them for a period of 2 days each. I found that whilst wearing them I did not get bitten. However, the 2 days I didn’t wear them (and didn’t use deet spray) I did get bitten on my legs. I tried them on their own (no bites) and combined with deet spray on my arms and legs (no bites). In Central America at least, these seem pretty effective. I also found the bites I did get weren’t itchy, so perhaps the lingering scent was off putting to mosquitos, so the bits weren’t as bad.

There are 5 insect bands of different colour. Once the plastic packaging is removed, the scent is very strong even though they are still in the individual packaging. I haven’t had a chance to test them out yet, but I’m hoping that with the strong scent, they should work well.

I was recently in Madeira where it was unseasonably warm, so we had the balcony door open at night to benefit from the cool sea breeze. Big mistake! Next morning I had a number of bites on my ankles and lower legs, not bad bites, just annoying, itchy red blotches and there were a couple of mossies flying around in the room. Wish I’d had these with me!

Five differently coloured leather straps – so no confusing which one belongs to which family member – and they smell pleasantly of lemon with a faint whiff of peppermint which is exactly what I expect. Adjustable so would fit most wrists they are attractive enough to look like any other leather wrist strap so are pretty unobtrusive. DEET free and plant based ingredients, they’re not vegan (obviously as they’re made of leather) but no non-biodegradable plastics or unpleasant chemicals either.

Most anti-insect bracelets I’ve used are made of plastic/rubber/silicon and have an effective life of a maybe a week or so, these are leather and have an expected life of 250 hours, or 10 days – I guess the longer life is due to leather being able to absorb the active ingredients rather than have them just coat the band. If you wore them 24/7 you should get 10 days use, but if you took them off during the day and put them in a resealable bag or container maybe you could stretch that to a full two weeks? I don’t know, just speculating. At £7.99 for five (as at 25 January 2023) these seem pretty good value to me.

Do they work though? The plain truth is I don’t really know. What I do know is that when I’ve used anti-insect liquids and creams containing the same ingredients I haven’t suffered any bites. I’ll be using these in conjunction with a spray as a ‘belt and braces’ approach to anti-insect protection.

    Worth a try.

A selection of colours so you should find one that everyone likes in your 5. They are leather and plaited which makes a nice change and could be mistaken for a “normal” bracelet. Good price at time of ordering – just under £8 – for 5.

One thing to bear in mind when packing or storing is that although they come individually wrapped you can still smell them through the packaging and I have had to put each one in another sealed bag and I can still smell the strong citronella! So far they have warned off my animals and hopefully they will do the same for the little critters while away.

    Hope this helps …..
