Pau d’arco is a tall broad-leaf evergreen native to central and South America. Medicinal use of the inner bark since the 19th century is now so widespread that the tree is becoming an endangered species.
Active ingredients of pau d’arco are lapachol and beta-lapachone, each proven to kill bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites.
The bark has been used to treat arthritis, fever, prostatitis, herpes simplex, ulcers and various cancers. However in studies where the number of cancer cells were reduced, the high amounts of lapachol needed for effective results reach levels toxic to humans, so it’s recommended that pau d’arco be taken only under the supervision of a qualified practitioner.
The bark of pau d’arco is available as a tea infusion and as 500mg hard-shell capsules. However, establishing the precise amount of lapachol extracted from the bark of a given tree can be difficult, hence the advice to take this medicine only under the guide of a medical herbalist.
